About the Club
Muskadasa Tennis Club
The Muskadasa Tennis Club is a private organization, formed as a family-oriented tennis club in 1990 by cottagers from Muskadasa Island and friends from neighbouring areas. The tennis courts are located at the South-Eastern part of Acton Island and are accessible by car or boat. Membership now comprises 55 families who reside nearby in summer months.

BIRTH and EVOLUTION OF THE CLUB

The chain of events that led to the formation of the Muskadasa Tennis Club was set in motion in 1988, when a few tennis enthusiasts on Muskadasa Island (Bells, Bakers, Waits, Sloans) learned that property abutting the Island’s parking area on Acton Island was for sale. This rocky, tree covered piece of land was to become the site of the Club’s two tennis courts.

The property was owned at the time by a relative of the Colwell family, a pioneering family who at one time owned much of the South end of Acton Island. Although the property is landlocked, the Colwell’s subdivision plan had provided for a special “public” access from the North end of the site to nearby Holiday Bay. Further, a 66 foot Township road allowance runs East from Wynanne Drive across the North end of the property, ending at the lake beside the Muskadasa Island parking area. This road allowance is now the location of the Muskadasa Tennis Club’s floating docks.
In time, the tennis enthusiasts prevailed upon the Muskadasa Island Club to purchase the property, reasoning that it could be resold as a cottage site if it wasn’t suitable for tennis. When some island residents decided they were not interested in tennis, the concept of a tennis club for the wider cottage community was born.
It was decided before shovels hit the ground that this would be a family run club, whereby a voting member could shelter five additional family members, recognizing that Muskoka cottages are gathering places for extended families. At time of opening, 36 families agreed to be the founding members and fund the construction of the courts, deck and dock.
Over the years, events were added and the membership grew but the Club's culture of active participation and good fellowship has been constant. The family membership structure ensures that a substantial number of future players will appreciate the factors and attitudes that have made the Tennis Club successful and enjoyable to its members.
